Celebrate the season with 'Girls' Night Out'

by Jan C. Snow

Cleveland-Windsong, Cleveland's Feminist Chorus, ushers in the summer next weekend with "Girls' Night Out," a joint concert with the Columbus Women's Chorus.

The program includes a variety of music from classical choruses and traditional tunes to Broadway melodies and Motown hits.

"This music speaks to multiple aspects of women's lives, with an emphasis

on fun," says Windsong artistic director Karen Weaver.

Each ensemble will offer a set in turn and the concert will conclude with selections by the combined choirs. Leading the Columbus group are directors Sheena Phillips and Jennifer Bell. Featured soloist is LaJoyce Daniel-Cain, director of the Gospel Choir at Otterbein College.

Accompanied by pianist Karin Tooley, Windsong will also be joined by violinist Mary Beth Ions, bassist

Gene Epstein and percussionist Janet Pemberton.

The concert is 4 pm Sunday, May 31, at the Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Avenue in University Circle. Tickets, $12 in advance and $15 at the door, are available from any Windsong singer or at the group's website www.windsongchorus.org. A reception follows the performance. For more information, call 216-556-0858.

Shaker student wins P-FLAG scholarship

by Adam Ratliff

Washington, D.C.-Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays announced May 18 that it has awarded 16 scholarships. More than $30,000 will go to students across the country who have made significant contributions to equality in their schools and communities.

Among the students receiving the honors is Kelsey DeForest of Shaker Heights High School, who received a $5,000 Palmer B. Carson Memorial Scholarship.

DeForest is an active member of Shaker's gay-straight alliance, student council, and theater program. She is also a reporter and editor of her school's newspaper. She interned with the Metro Youth Outreach program at the Cleveland LGBT Center, where she worked

with at-risk and homeless youth. She has used her skills and compassion to reach out and make a difference in the lives of others.

This marks the sixth year that P-FLAG has awarded the scholarships, which are funded by the Palmer B. Carson Trust and other private donors, including the Gay, Lesbian and Allies at Dow Employee Network, the Esera Tuaolo Scholarship fund, and the New York Gay Football League.

"Now, more than ever, P-FLAG is extremely proud to honor these future community leaders and to honor their academic achievement, commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender progress, and community service," said P-FLAG executive director Jody M. Huckaby. "LGBT students, and their allies, are overcoming unimaginable

obstacles to succeed and prosper in their education. This year's awardees have not only fought those obstacles, but have become role models for their communities and fellow students."

Among the other students receiving the national scholarships are Thomas Gray of Prairie Village, Kansas; Sean Hudson of Bessemer, Alabama; Shelagh Hardrich of Omaha, Nebraska; Simone Getty of Santa Clara, California; Jacob De Vine of Little Falls, Minnesota; Dena Wessel of Madison, Wisconsin; Jesse Quinn of Pleasant Hill, Oregon; Jennifer Rokakis of Canton, Michigan; Ryan Dykes of Minden, Nevada; and Francis Jordan of Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Adam Ratliff is communications coordinator for P-FLAG's national office.
